My father, Samuel

United States in 1919 from
eastern Europe—the only
member of his family to
escape the Holocaust.
But he didn’t escape it; it
haunted him for the rest
of his life. After years of
study to understand how
such unspeakable horrors
could happen, I visited
the Museum soon after it
opened. I was amazed at
how effectively it brought
this history to life and taught
visitors, without preaching,
how hatred and prejudice
can lead to persecution and
genocide. The Museum is
not only a much-needed
memorial to the millions
who died at the hands of
the Nazis; it is also the best
insurance that such horrors
never happen again.”
First and foremost, the
expression ‘Never Again’
has become ‘Again and
Again.’ The people of the
world must learn to be
humane to each other. If
we continue to forget the
mistakes of the past, we
will keep reliving them,
as pointed out by the
noted philosopher George
Santayana. Every nation
has an obligation to teach
the lessons learned during
all of history’s holocausts
with the hope that such
barbarism never occurs
again. The Museum is the
largest of several in the
country performing these
vital tasks.”
