TIMOTHY HURSLEY
I never had grandparents.
My mother told me stories
of her youth and how she
met my father, and as I grew older,
she told me about when the Nazis
entered Silesia. I knew I was lucky
she and her sister had made it to the
United Kingdom to be domestics for
a year. My father left his chemical
engineering job and got out
through France in 1940, but his
sister perished, as did both my
grandmothers. Later, I learned how
many other relatives and friends had
died or suffered. With the support of
my cousins, I decided to provide the
United States Holocaust Memorial
Museum with family artifacts I held
that bore witness to the terrible
events of that time. We all must do
what we can to prevent hate crimes
and genocide.”
