ADVANCING
UNDERSTANDING
My two brothers,
Jack and Joseph, and
I were a reflection of
the home in which we
grew up—a home with parents
whose values were the best of
Western civilization. My parents
had no extra money, but they
managed to be charitable. As a result,
we became advocates for a better
world. Supporting the US Holocaust
Memorial Museum makes us feel that
we’re acting in a very responsible way.
This museum is working to create a
deeper understanding of genocide
and why genocide needs to be dealt
with almost like a plague. Jack, Joe,
and I participated in the founding
of the US Holocaust Memorial
Museum and now are pleased and
honored to have the Mandel name
on the Museum Center for Advanced
Holocaust Studies, one of the
world’s principal venues for
Holocaust scholarship.
152 l UNITED STATES HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL MUSEUM LEGACY OF LIGHT GUARDIANS
The ambitious assignment the
Museum has undertaken to
research what happened during the
Holocaust, to do serious research
on why genocide continues, and to
teach it and teach others to teach it—
is a mission that should last forever.
Our family lost 27 relatives in Poland
during the Holocaust. That was a
searing experience for us. We want
the Museum to be an active force
that will remind people all the
time, in as many ways as possible,
that genocide is a sin, and when
genocide does occur, so is silence.”
