Never
forgotten.”
JOSEPHINE B. SOKOLSKI
New York, New York
As a young child, I
learned that millions
of Jews had been
murdered by the Nazis. It
prompted me to say that we
should have many children,
so we could replace those
who were gone. That was
the idea of a child, because
nobody can be replaced, but
later I thought, the world
must never forget about
what happened. Twenty
years ago, we joined the
United States Holocaust
Memorial Museum as
charter members because
we believed that this was
one way to send the message
‘Never Again.’ By giving
a legacy gift, we hope the
message will continue for
generations to come.”
The United States
Holocaust Memorial
Museum is so important
Recently, while
touring the Museum,
I met the staff in the
for middle-aged and young
people. They need to
understand what happened
to the Jewish people of
Europe during the Nazi
reign and how we brought
them to this country. Our
generation lived through
that time and knows the
true events, which are
not properly taught in
the classroom or on the
Internet. What’s happening
today has no bearing on
that time in history. We are
proudly committed to the
work of the Museum for
future generations.”
library. I mentioned that
a beloved cousin, the only
Holocaust survivor of
our extended family, had
recorded her testimony.
Within seconds, I heard
her voice. If not for this
Museum, who would be
safekeeping my cousin’s
testimony and the other
recollections and artifacts
that preserve Holocaust
history? Back in the early
1990s, when our family
made its first donation,
the Museum was a dream,
a hope, a fervent wish.
Today it is a reality, a
physical presence, a living
monument that will tell
the truth of the Holocaust
when my generation and
I can no longer do so.”
