TIMOTHY HURSLEY
For those of us with
only faded pictures of
unknown grandparents,
secondhand descriptions
of unmet aunts and uncles,
or partial knowledge of the
unfathomable pain described
by those who survived, there is
no more fitting homage than to
remember. We remember Nissim,
Erietta, Marcella, and Richard
Alcalai, deported and gassed in
Auschwitz. We remember Saul
Molho’s beating and humiliation
at the hands of the Nazis and Lily
Alcalai Molho’s daring escape and
ultimate sacrifice of entrusting a
young son to Christian homes so
he might live. Today, the oncevibrant Sephardic community
of Thessaloniki, Greece, is but
an enclave of ghosts. We, their
descendants, have the sacred
task to remember, to recount,
and to honor their memories.”
